Summary on Grant Application Form
The principal aim is to demonstrate that light can be used to control electronic functions associated with single molecules. By use of the break junction technique an individual molecule will be wired to a macroscopic circuit so as to allow the molecule's electronic/electrical properties to be measured. A range of intramolecular photochemical process will be explored as means of providing optoelectronic/photonic function within such wired molecules. The overall aim will be to assess experimentally the feasibility of building light-activated switches and memory elements within single molecules. The project hence aims to extend recent progress in the burgeoning area of molecular electronics to encompass a new area, molecular optoelectronics/photonics.
