Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is directed to develop new markers of epithelial architecture with the purpose of semi-automated cancer and precancer diagnosis to provide new information on the structural properties of tissues using formal methods. Therefore diagnosis will be more accurate, sensitive and reproducible than current standards. The project's aim is to investigate mathematical techniques from Graph Theory to Fractal Geometry to analyse the architecture of normal human oral epithelium, hyperplastic and neoplastic epithelial tissues. We aim to create a morphological and syntactical database of features to describe spatial hierarchical cell relationships: cell clustering, space tesselation and their complexity.
