Summary on Grant Application Form
We have recently found that LiCoMnO4 and related materials can operate as reversible cathodes in prototype high voltage lithium batteries. LiCoMnO4 can reversibly deintercalate and intercalate almost 1 mole of Li at a potential of ca 5 volts vs Li/Li+ for (90% of the charge-discharge process. Novel redox phenomena are involved and there is some preliminary evidence for the O2-/O- redox couple in addition to the expected Mn3+/Mn4+ and Co3+/Co4+ couples. Work is proposed to characterise the composition, structure and properties of 'LiCoMnO4', including in situ studies during charge/discharge, to understand the redox chemistry responsible for the unprecedentedly high voltages that are obtained, to optimise the high voltage performance by materials processing and/or doping and to replace Co and/or Mn, at least partially, by Fe so as to achieve comparable electrochemical performance in lower cost materials.
