The primary objective of this proposal is to enable recent methods for determining the conveyance capacity of open channels, which have been developed in the research domain, to be transferred into the domain of the practising engineer. The proposal combines the expertise of two river engineering specialists: Professor Knight (fundamentals, resistance, flood hydraulics) and Dr. Whitlow (computational river engineering and information technology). The objective will be achieved by developing the ISIS software code to include a user-defined open conveyance formulation, along with more recent formulations, such as the 'coherence method' (COHM) by Ackers (1993), and the Shiono & Knight methods (SKM) (1991, 1996). These formulations should lead to better simulations of water levels and conveyance capacities in natural river channels, as well as opening up the possibility of determining the lateral distribution of key parameters, such as depth-averaged velocity and boundary shearstress, across the channel section.
