Ultrasonic non-destructive testing provides a key input to structural integrity assessment. One important method of quantifying ultrasonic inspection capability is through mathematical modelling, and e.g. the diffraction coefficients arising in the problem of diffraction by a traction-free isotropic elastic half-plane are routinely used to quantify the amplitudes of echoes from the edges of the cracks embedded into ferritic components. However, many cracks are surface-breaking, and the problem of diffraction by an appropriate elastic wedge has not been completely solved. Recently, several promising semi-analytical schemes have been advocated in various mathematical publications, and this year our Research Centre for Waves and Fields (RCWF) at SBU has been funded by the Industry Management Committee of the UK Nuclear Licensees to investigate the state of the art. As the result, RCWF came up with their own recipe- based on Sommerfeld-Malyuzhinets-Budaev approach - for evaluating the relevant diffraction coefficients. The proposed project aims at analysing subroutines developed at RCWF in the course of this work and thus taking stock of what has been achieved before embarking on large industrial and EPSRC projects directed at validation and simplification of the RCWF code. Thus, the project is designed to meet an industrial need and simultaneously address an outstanding problem in applied mathematics.
