Bio-fuels are now becoming available as alternatives to more traditional fuels. The main aims of this study are to explore and understand the effects of bio-fuels on combustion and emissions in compression ignition engines, and investigate the application of exhaust gas fuel reforming in combustion of bio-diesel fuel mixtures. Previous research suggests that fuel reforming has the potential to improve combustion of bio-fuel mixtures, allow engine operation with high levels of exhaust gas recirculation and reduce emissions.First, the effects of bio-diesel mixtures will be investigated in terms of both combustion signature and exhaust emissions. Bio-fuels will be studied as mixtures in various proportions with diesel fuel.The application of exhaust gas fuel reforming will then be investigated with bio-diesel mixtures. This will involve: 1) establishment of the envelope of benefits to engine operation and emissions obtained by the addition of practically feasible quantities of simulated reformed fuel and setting targets for the reforming process, 2) study of the efficiency of the reforming process using potentially suitable catalysts in the reformer, aiming to achieve the target performances set in task 1, and 3) development of guidelines and suggestions for the design of a practical fuel reforming unit to supply the engine with the required reformate.
