Summary on Grant Application Form
Quantum information processing, and quantum computers, are a rapidly growing field of research. Professors Platzman and Dykman (Science 284 (1999) 1967) have suggested that surface state electrons on liquid helium could be used as quantum bits, or qubits, and might form the basis of a quantum computer. The electrons would be localised in microstructures covered with a 0.5 micron thick film of liquid helium. The quantum states would be the Rydberg states of the electrons in the attractive potential well at the liquid surface. The aim of this proposal is to develop micro-traps for electrons on liquid helium, with a view to creating a quantum bit, or qubit. A single-electron transistor (SET) will be used to detect the electrons and, if possible, to determine the quantum state of an electron. Millimetric microwaves will be used to couple the quantum states. The research should lead to improved understanding of quantum states and, if successful, the creation of a novel quantum object for experiments or applications to quantum information processing. The research will be carried out in collaboration with scientists at the CEA, Saclay, France and elsewhere.
