To develop techniques describing the monodromy of Lefschetz fibrations and branched covers, in particular the calculation of fundamental groups of branch-curve complements. Analysis of specific examples such as Horikawa surfaces and iterated cyclic covers. Application to the classification of symplectic 4-manifolds.
