Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the project is to conduct a feasibility study on the role of ethics in future product development and design organisations. In particular, the aim is to analyse both societal expectations about how designers make decisions which can cause risk to others, and to analyse how designers in fact make those decisions currently. This will lead to the development of general models - again both of the way society's expectations are developing and the way that design decisions lead to ethical dilemmas. This in turn will lead to a decisions support system which will provide templates against which design organisations can test their ethical reasoning, and linked to which are known methods of resolution. The system and underlying models will be evaluated with industrial firms in order to assess whether a full study is worthwhile.
