Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to understand the orientational behaviour of zwitterionic telechelic polymers under the influence of an applied field, to determine the mechanism and dynamics of the process. Our preliminary studies have shown that ordering of these polymers, but anomalous non-exponential responses to field transitions have been observed. This research is designed to fully understand the behaviour and ultimately to be able to control the orientation behaviour of these polymers. In order to achieve this goal we will synthesise these polymers with well controlled functionality and molecular weight. The affect of solvent polarity and concentration on intra- or inter-chain aggregation phenomena will be explored initially using light and X-ray scattering. The light scattering equipment will be constructed as part of the upgrade to the existing Kerr apparatus so that simultaneous measurements can be undertaken. The effect an electric field has on the orientational behaviour of these polymers will be studied using combined Kerr and light scattering measurements in conjunction with X-ray scattering in order to understand the orientational process and to explain the anomalous behaviour found in our preliminary studies.
