Nanotechnology is still a relatively new field of research and development, yet it is predicted to have as great an impact on the 21st century as the technology of microchip had on the second half of the 20th century. The mechanical, electronic and optics industries require the best measuring technologies to ensure that their products meet specific standards. Additionally opportunities for nanotechnology are increasingly being exploited in the fields of physics, biology, medical engineering and nano-tronics. The proposed network will bring together well established research groups and industrial concerns in complementary fields of precision engineering and nanometrology. Invitees to the proposed workshops will range across the field of nanotechnology in general. The proposed network will supply from its core members, advice and courses on best practice; identify needs for metrology and spin off projects to develop new techniques and act as a means of informing national and international standards bodies about upcoming needs. Particular areas of interest for the core age group are: next generation calibration and standards; nanometrology associated with biomedical and microsurgical applications; developing and comparing optical and 'contact' methods for metrology of micromechanical devices.
