|
This proposal sets out a programme of research to investigate the context, design and membership of global manufacturing virtual networks. It addresses the needs of large corporations and smaller businesses to understand the characteristics of such networks and to position themselves within them. The research approach involves a combination of economic, strategic and operational studies. The economic work addresses economic trends and forecasts and their implications for industry structures. It is related to the Cambridge Manufacturing Foresight Associate Programme. The strategic work builds on manufacturing and business strategy models and recent research into global manufacturing in large corporations. The operational work involves detailed field studies of operational practice and the information technology requirements to sustain highly integrated remote operation of manufacturing networks. The involvement of major international companies, GKN and Honeywell Inc (Turbochargers), together with networks of SMEs in the UK and China, provides a unique research environment. The key outputs of the research will be detailed understanding of the nature and characteristics of global manufacturing virtual networks and guidelines for industry on the design and membership of such neworks.
