Summary on Grant Application Form
This collaboration will address the two main groups of HTS conductors, in which both IC and UW already have considerable experience. In the 2nd generation YBaCuO-based coated conductors, to investigate improved methods of deposition and texturing, and of ameliorating the limitation imposed by grain boundaries. Also, to design conductor configurations suitable for AC use.In 1st generation BiSrCaCuO-phase conductors (already produced commercially), starting from their known severe inhomogeneity of critical current density Jc, to learn how to achieve a uniformly high performance, and to find ways to reduce the rapid degradation of Jc by magnetic fields. The synergy between IC and UW rests on similar research ethos and complementary capabilities: processing techniques (laser ablation deposition, spray pyrolysis and liquid phase epitaxy), structural characterisations (transmission electron microscopy, electron back-scattered diffraction, scanning Raman microscopy) and super-conductive characterisations (eg magneto-optic imaging and scanning Hall probe imaging). The value of the individual research programmes will come from: joint projects and discussion thereof, joint workshops, short visits by senior postgraduate students and post-doctoral workers. The other important dimension is enhanced interaction with the leading UK-based company in the field (which has a US subsidiary), and with a leading US national laboratory.
