Summary on Grant Application Form
Dye-sensitised solar cells are recognised as one of the most promising emerging technologies for the second generation photovoltaic (PV) power generations. Current commercial development is based upon the use of glass substrates for device manufacture. We propose to target the demonstration of a plastic encapsulated dye sensitised PV cell. The use of plastic substrates is expected to confer real end-user benefits, not only in terms of costs but also in terms of weight/volume reduction and ease of integration into consumer hardware. The development of novel device components and device assembly producers will be essential to achieve a plastic PV cell with the required performance characteristics. In particular, we build upon our existing expertise and IPR to develop novel polymer electrolyte hole transporting materials suitable for plastic encapsulated, novel low temperature fabrication routes for nano-structured ceramic (e.g.: TiO2) films suitable for deposition on plastic substrates, and novel sensitiser dyes optimised for integration with these new device components.
