The process of haptically exploring an object encompasses many correlated sensory cues. The act of touching can provide information regarding texture, shape, compliance and heat conductive qualities of an object, and is usually obtained in conjunction with visual information. On some occasions the touching process may be audible, for example, as a tap or scrape. Haptic interface devices are typically restricted to a single point of interaction, corresponding to the tip of a probe or thimble, and are often restricted in their ability to display properties having high spatial frequency content (such as texture and friction). Information flow to the user regarding simulated object properties is typically impoverished. This project will develop a haptic device for a thumb and two fingers and evaluate a concept of perceptual illusions to measure information flow in haptic interaction. The interface will be enhanced with a high frequency tactile thimble, as well as visual and auditory channels to allow high fidelity haptic interactions.
