Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks funding for curiosity-driven science to demonstrate a new principle in template-directed materials synthesis. The objective of the proposed work is to integrate approaches based on exo- and endo-templating for the direct synthesis of novel inorganic nanostructures and architectures. Specifically, we will use oil-based Ba(AOT)2 reverse microemulsions in association with conventional surfactant micelles formed in aqueous solutions containing sulphate ions to produce BaSO4 materials with nanoshell morphology. Our aim is to use this system as a proof-of-concept in the development of reaction systems involving the simultaneous operation of two or more self-assembled templates. We intend to extend this approach using (a) reactants such as Co (AOT)2 and Cu(AOT)2 and (b) self-assembled templates such as worm like micelles, cationized protein and viroid cages and phospholipid vesicles to produce a range of hollow inorganic nanostructures with well-defined architecture.
