A novel class of bis (diazaphospholidine ligands have been designed, and a prototypes derivative synthesised. A series of preliminary investigations have revealed that the complexes of these ligands with rhodium (1) are excellent catalysts for the asymmetric hydroformylation of vinyl acetate. The results compare favourably with the very best known ligands for this application, and in some cases they are superior. Further studies suggests that a co-ordinating group on the substrate may be essential for high enantioselectivity. The project involves a collaboration with the CATS catalyst evaluation service based at St Andrews University (Director: Professor D. Cole Hamilton), where the hydroformylation reactions will be carried out. Their results will be fed back into the ligand design and synthesis programme.This proposal is in three parts:a) The synthesis of a series of derivatives of the basic (bis (diazaphospholidine) ligand, and characterisation by X-ray crytallography of the their R (1) complexes.b) The hydroformylation of a range of diverse substrates in order to define the scope and limitations of our methodology.c) Research into the mechanism of the reaction.
