Summary on Grant Application Form
The objectives of this EPSRC JREI research proposal are to support applications for the study of natural activity 14CO2 at contaminated land and groundwater sites, to provide advanced, high-prevision and low-level Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC) and generic radio-tracing facilities in the EERC-Environmental Tracers Laboratory, and to underpin existing research applications in Environmental Engineering for Contaminated Land and Groundwater in the QUESTOR Centre, Queen's University of Belfast. The proposed LSC equipment will not only enhance the multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary activities of Environmental Engineering, but will also allow demonstration of the utility of radio-tracer studies alongside existing stable isotope and noble gas capabilities. The overall long-term contribution of the proposed JREI-supported equipment to the research infrastructure of both Queen's University of Belfast and UK plc is the integrated use of radio-tracer techniques in tandem with other stable isotope and tracer applications for contaminated land and groundwater research. The Queen's University of Belfast welcomes research collaboration from any group in the UK who wished access to the facility and its applications.
