The Warwick Symposium on Mechanics and Symmetry will focus on the symplectic and differential geometry of symmetrical Hamiltonian systems and applications of geometry and symmetry techniques to the classical, semiclassical and quantum mechanics of N-body problems (gravitational, atoms and molecules) and to continuum mechanics (fluids and elasticity theory). Particular topics will include phase space reduction and reconstruction, stability and bifurcations of relative equilibria, heterorclinic structures, geometric numerical integration, theoretical models for atomic and molecular spectra, multisymplectic methods, (alpha-)Euler equations. Hamiltonian free boundary problems, the dynamics of vorticity and geometric aspects of elasticity theory.Symposium activities supporting the year-long research programme will include a two-week European Summer School, followed by three workshops of 7-14 days each. These will be accompanied by a very active seminar series at Warwick and a series of short meetings at universities around the UK. It is anticipated that there will be at least 10 long term visitors coming for three months or more from overseas and that a significant amount of research will be conducted under the auspices of the Symposium. Interaction between the overseas participants and the UK mathematical community will be facilitated by an Outreach fund.
