Summary on Grant Application Form
A study of the effect of the counter-ion on the dynamics of water exchange of cationic and anionic centres using variable temperature and variable pressure proton on 17O NMR methods. Results from this study will be correlated with a crystallographic investigation of the effect of the anion on the inner, second and outer hydration sphere in related series of Gd and Eu complexes. The differing ability of chaotropic (eg chloride, potassium) and the more charge dense kosmotropic (eg phosphate, magnesium, calcium) ions to influence the structure and dynamics will be compared, for processes where it is believed that the water interchange process takes place with an early or late transition state structure, which in turn is determined by the stereochemistry of the parent lanthanide complex.
