The proposed research involves detailed structural investigation on a range of novel molecular and polymeric materials in order to gain a better understanding of the intermolecular interactions that occur in these systems in the solid state. This information is essential to further advances in the chemistry of these materials which include oligoporphyrins, electro-active organic and NLO materials, organometallic polymers, molecular clusters and inorganic molecular magnets, and to the design of new materials with novel properties. The methods of analysis chosen are single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction since these are the only methods that will give the full three dimensional picture of the solid state structures. Many of the materials either do not form single crystals or crystallise to produce small weakly diffracting samples so the use of the high intensity X-ray source at the CLRC Daresbury Laboratory is essential for both single crystal (Station 9.8) and powder (Station 2.3) studies. The single crystal studies represent a continuation of a current, highly successful EPSRC supported project. The additional, and innovative, development is to apply various recently developed algorithms to solve structures from powder X-ray data from our key chemical systems and explore the power of this methodology while at the same time producing results of great chemical significance.
