The proposed research project aims at the development of a turbulent two-phase combustion model. The process of atomisation, vaporisation, turbulent mixing and combustion (as well as their interaction) will be taken into account explicitly. The proposed method introduces a transport equation for a new quantity, the mean area of gas-liquid interface per unit volume. This is the key quantity in a two-phase flow, the knowledge of which allows ready calculation of many important values, e.g. rate of vaporisation, Sauter mean diameter of the droplets, etc.Hypotheses necessary for the model formulation will be assessed by comparison with available experimental data, chosen in such a way that the individual governing processes, e.g. vaporisation or small-scale mixing will be first isolated; then the description of their interaction will be assessed with the help of more evolved measurements.This development will result in a simple mathematical description of two-phase reactive flows, robust and general enough to be included in applied design computer codes.
