Summary on Grant Application Form
A recent grant application GR/M51109 awarded to DAJ, AIK and prof. BFG Johnson provided funds to purchase a commercial 300kV Transmission Electron Microscope together with post-doctoral support which is to be modified to provide a new speciman stage, objective lens and crucially an electron beam monochromator. The basic design of the monochromator will be carried out by Dr K Tsuno as part of an ongoing collaboration. Funds are requested to enable Dr Tsuno to visit Cambridge on two occasions to assist with the initial installation of the sector magnets and filter assembly and the installation of the filter into the microscope column. Dr Tsuno's expertise will be of great benefit in a number of areas within the project. Firstly, it will facilitate the interfacing of components constructed in Cambridge (such as the sector magnets) with those constructed in Japan (such as the beam deflectors and stigmators). Secondly since Dr Tsuno has a very detailed knowledge of the commercial instrument onto which the filter will be fitted he will be of assistance in the initial installation of the filter and its interfacing to the mechanical, electrical and vacuum systems of the standard instrument.
