Various techniques have been developed for the synthesis and sizing of dynamic systems across the range of engineering domains but these are specific to each domain. Because of physical analogies and the complex (multidisciplinary) nature of engineering systems, generic synthesis methods developed in an engineering domain should aim to be applicable to other engineering domains. However, obstacles to a unified approach are not only due to the specialised nature of each engineering field but also result from the non-uniform representation and the non-systematic correlation between the schematic drawings of systems and their mathematical models. At present, bond graphs are tools that have been proven to bring a unified approach to system modelling and have been intensively used for systems analysis. In this programme of research, it is proposed to investigate and develop the use of bond graphs in the synthesis of systems. The advantage inherent to this approach is that it is neutral with respect to the technology domain realisation at the conceptual level. The project will consider a unified approach to the formulation of design objectives, investigate the realisability problem and develop a methodology for bond graph model based generation of design solutions. Physical realisations of the generated models will be investigated and applications of the synthesis and sizing methodology will be provided across a range of engineering domains.
