The research proposed is to develop control strategies for fuelling, cold-start and variable valve (inlet and outlet valve) engines based on the in-cylinder pressure sensing. The likely introduction of production in-cylinder pressure sensors has considerable potential to provide high performance emissions regulation and improved fuel consumption whilst maintaining drivability by robust feedback control. Using the proposed in-cylinder pressure sensor equipped dynamometer, control models relating in-cylinder pressure and air-fuel-ratio for improved fuelling feedback regulation will be investigated. Associated control strategies to augment and improve on existing air-fuel-ratio regulation will be developedThe research will investigate methods of estimating bulk air-fuel mixture temperature from in-cylinder pressure sensors for accurate estimation of cylinder air ingested. The resulting algorithms will be used to develop reliable cold-start fuelling strategies.Using a specifically supplied Ford variable valve research engine both inlet and outlet valve timing control will be investigated. The objective will be to improve fuel economy and drivability without compromising emissions through improved volumetric efficiency and exhaust gas recirculation based NOX reduction.
