Summary on Grant Application Form
The requested laser system will be employed in two related research programmes involved with the generation and characterisation of interacting pairs of molecules of chemical and biological interest. In the first programme, ablation with the Nd:YAG laser will be used to vaporise lithium halides (LiX) from which complexes of the type B...LiX, where B is a Lewis base, will be generated. The lithium -bonded complexes will then be characterised by rotational spectroscopy, with the aim of securing an understanding of the analogue of the hydrogen bond. In the second programme, pre-reactive intermediates of chemical importance, such as C2H2...Cl2, will be produced by a fast-mixing nozzle and then electronic spectra will be observed by using the requested dye laser system. The aim of these experiments is to determine the factors which control the structure and bonding within these complexes. These complexes represent secondary minima on the potential-energy surface for the associated reactions and the experiments will also allow the possibilities for photochemical control of these reactions to be explored.
