The objectives of the proposal are to exploit a novel, high brightness x-ray source with focusing optics to undertake a range of grazing incidences and small angle scattering studies of a range of materials. We will also use the microfocus source, without optics, for phase contrast imaging. A Bede Microsource( miniature x-ray generator, equipped with either an ellipsoidal micromirror or polycapillary optics, will be installed on an existing (-( diffractometer to provide a unique laboratory facility. Experiments which presently can only be conducted at synchrotron radiation sources will be undertaken. These include surface diffraction and out-of-plane grazing incidences diffuse scatter measurements of the interface structure in magnetic multilayers to understand the relationship between interface characteristics and magnetic properties. The location of trace amounts of material will be determined with improved sensitivity through variable angle grazing incidences x-ray fluorescence with a focused beam. Success will open the way for such experiments to be performed in an industrial context where scheduling of beamtime presently precludes their use. Alternative use of Rh target, without optics, permits phase gradient contrast imaging to be attempted. The optimum criteria for such imaging of soft materials, including biological materials, will be established at this wavelength.
