Summary on Grant Application Form
This Network seeks to improve the general co-ordination of work on Advanced Particulate and Thin Film Recording Media in the UK. This will be achieved by bringing together the leading academic groups in the field and providing opportunities for networking via a fairly intensive programme of Topical Meetings. These Topical Meetings will be held at the rate of two per year, facilitating at least one meeting per year on each of the major subject areas associated with particulate media and thin film media. It is intended that these Topical Meetings will generally be held at the premises of the major industrial concerns active in the area who are principally users of technology rather than primary manufacturers of media itself.Networking will be further enhanced by an intensive Programme of Exchange of Young Scientists, with each laboratory having one opportunity for a two week exchange each year to another academic base. Additionally, further networking with the industrial sector will be facilitated by one exchange during the three year period for each laboratory to an industrial concern. In this way, in addition to improving the awareness and networking among those active in the field, specific industrial experience in the field will be provided for young scientists.
