Summary on Grant Application Form
We plan to use numerical modelling and a novel analytic approach to characterise the relationship between the spatial variation of the magnetic field generated by the field gradient coils that are used in MRI, and the peak amplitude and the spatial pattern of electric field induced in the human body by gradient field switching. Analysis of both head-insert and whole-body gradient coils will be carried out. The results will be validated by making experimental measurements of peripheral nerve simulation in volunteers for a small sub-set of the gradient coils investigated using numerical modelling. In addition, we will extent existing methods of gradient coil design so as to produce gradient coils that allow larger gradient switching rates to be achieved without causing peripheral nerve simulation. The electric fields generated in the human body by these coils will be evaluated using numerical modelling and the efficacy of these coils in allowing larger gradient switching rates to be achieved without causing nerve simulation will also be tested experimentally.
