This project will develop robust rules for on-line signal control of road traffic using Learning Classifier Systems. These offer the automated rule development of neural networks together with the transparency of production systems. This architecture offers substantial promise for traffic control systems because the response to variations in flows can be adapted according to measured traffic conditions. This is important to achieve control that can respond rapidly when conditions change fundamentally, as at the start of a peak period, without being unduly sensitive to short-term variations. A closed-loop approach will be used to develop signal control strategies according to their performance evaluated using detailed microscopic simulation as opposed to estimated from formulae that are adopted on grounds of analytical convenience. The advantages of this include flexibility in respect of objectives so that multiple and varying policy needs can be accommodated, ability to use various kinds of detector data according to their availability, and freedom from dependence on any single evaluation formula that is intended to embody the whole traffic model. This final point is especially important because recent research shows that performance can depend strongly on certain fine details of the models used. The present results-based approach will overcome those deficiencies.
