Summary on Grant Application Form
Negative corona and breakdown in SF6 and SF6 mixtures are little investigated and understood, by comparison with the positive case, particularly where the interaction with solid insulating surfaces is involved. There is thus a need for experimental characterisation and improved modelling so that predictive criteria for dielectric withstand can be developed. The effect of surfaces on the well-known stabilisation zone is not known and modelling is non-existent. A programme of experimental work is proposed in which the spatial development of negative streamer corona and subsequent leader dynamics will be studied using photomultiplier, charge measurement, and field filter probe techniques, first in the simple gas phase as reference then with interacting insulating surfaces of various materials, profiles and surface properties. Extensions of the programme, with spectroscopic work and arc effects on surfaces, are foreseen. The on-year Visiting Fellowship is designed to initiate substantial activity in the tow institutions, each of which, by the nature of their respective expertises, can itself contribute, with the Fellow, to the momentum of the Project. Mixtures are regarded as important, in view of recent international agreements to limit emissions of SF6.
