The release of unpleasant odours from wastewater treatment, waste management, agriculture and industrial practices is an area of growing environmental concern. This has resulted in odour control and prevention becoming a key issue in planning applications for both modification of existing facilities and in developing new sites. At present the UK has no exposure standard to regulate for the emission of odours from these processes, this guidance is clearly needed. Unfortunately, the regulation of odours requires an accurate and reproducible methodology. The measurement of odours is not straightforward and considerable debate has focused on the difference between the two broad classes (analytical and sensory measurements) used for odour monitoring, The expected arrival of the new CEN standard should have clarified this, however this standard has been in draft form since 1995. Additionally, the poor understand of the linkages between the different odour measurements used, has lead to much confusion in trying to apply these to odour modelling and treatment and when regulating for odour emissions.The need for the development of standards of practices or guidelines is essential. The establishment of a UK Odour Network will provide a platform for the constructive discuss of issues concerned with the control and prevention of odours. These opportunities will provide a statement on current practices and limitations, which will allow the development of collaborative research proposal, so that benchmarks for generating standards and techniques can be established.
