This proposal is intended to support three key areas of interdisciplinary research. Work on Optical Telecommunications will focus on the further development of new wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques to meet the growing demand for increased capacity and complex user requirements. The proposed new facilities will also benefit related research in microelectronics and photonics. A new NMR Spectrometer is sought for research on the development and evaluation of new solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance methodology for the determination of molecular structure. The advances will include developments in hardware, software, isotopic labelling schemes, numerical simulations and theory. The methodology will be applied to model systems of biological relevance, such as peptides, proteins, carbohydrates and nuclear acids. Finally, a new high resolution transmission electron microscope is proposed to provide enhanced materials analysis for groups working on meso/microporous solids and structured oxides, combinatorial chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, quantum and functional materials, microelectronics, optoelectronics, materials and bioengineering.
