Summary on Grant Application Form
Enhancement of the University's capacity to promote, encourage and facilitate multidisciplinary working in two strategic priority areas which build upon existing research excellence. The establishment of a virtual environment and 3D visualisation research laboratory. This will build upon current work and allow the development of new multidisciplinary projects involving research in Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, Psychology, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and the performing arts. Projects will include computer assisted surgery, VE based training, medical, biomedical, biological and chemical visualisation, virtual prototyping and environmental visualisation particularly estuarine and seabed conditions.Enhancing the multidisciplinary structural laboratory by the addition of an X-ray diffractometer. Projects will include investigations of engineering materials relating Surface finishes and strain/fatigue; Opto-electronic investigations relating to materials for blue light emitting displays and the properties of excimer laser modified phophors for thin film displays; Magnetic molecules; and Biomaterials involving work on sidephores, enzyme and enzyme models as well as on carbohydrates.
