Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is for four suites of state-of-the-art equipment which will both enhance and create new multidisciplinary research projects across the disciplines of Engineering, Physics, Chemistry and medicine at the University of Sheffield. The theme of the research is Measurement and Fabrication Across the Length Scales 1nm to mm . The emphasis of the work is on the structures of materials where the ability to pattern small scale (e.g. typically 50 nanometre structures). Using the new electron beam of light lithography facility, will enable international-class research in the cross-disciplinary areas of photonics, laser, microelectronics, quantum computation, micro-mechanical systems and control of micromagnetic properties. In the medical field, cell investigations through Fluorescence cell image, combined with nano-scale measurements in Biomaterials, will align with the current surface engineering research for cell proliferation, and hence creating new interactive projects.Characterisation of materials in the areas of polymers, food-gels, particulars, precipitation in metallics etc will be possible via the requested X-ray equipment, leading to major advances in the understanding hierarchical structures which will integrate with the research into particle sizing, waste water contaminants, pharmaceutical engineering and combustion studies.Extending the research from nanoscale to the mm scale will be considerably enhanced by acquisition of the plane strain compression facility which will ensure continuity of the existing multidisciplinary research in metallic microstructures.
