|
The research proposed covers two of the interdisciplinary themes established by Imperial College within its overall strategy. The first is concerned with the production of novel materials and the characterisation testing and measurement of all types of materials. The extent of the work upon material science in the College means that the applications extend from composites, MBE films and adhesives, to biomaterials and structural alloys. The second theme is concerned with biomedicine and a number of items of equipment are connected with the application of the science and engineering base of the College to the area of biomedicine which poses new and exciting challenges. The applications range from the use of adaptive optics to study the retina, through the development of a virtual reality simulation to aid surgery, to tissue engineering.Research in hydraulics, civil engineering studies and transport studies is to be enhanced with a new computing resource, as is work on plasma physics simulations. New equipment for chemistry will maintain the excellence of synthetic and catalytic work while flow studies in aeronautics are enhanced by two proposals.
