Summary on Grant Application Form
The research proposed here will be based upon the establishment of a suit of nanofabrication and characterisation equipment. This consists of a focussed Ion Beam fabrication machine and a Field Emission Gun Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope. These will be used in-concert. They will be used firstly to permit the fabrication and characterisation of nanostructured and microstructured materials and devices, facilitating the exploration of materials and device behaviour on the nanometre scale and the interaction of textured surfaces with biological agents. Here the FIB will be used as a fabrication tool for cutting patterns in the surfaces of the materials under study and for localised deposition of metal (Pt) for electrodes and the FEG ESEM used to structurally characterised and analyse the structures at the appropriate resolution. Secondly the will be used to permit the detailed structural analysis of a wide range of specimens for materials science, engineering and biology. In this case the FIB will be used for the preparation of the cross-sections for subsequent analysis in the FEG ESEM and other existing facilities (CM20 STEM). The facility which is proposed consists of two instruments as a single integrated facility for multi-disciplinary project work and will be installed in a purpose-built central facility
