Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for the purchase of a suite of three instruments that will extend and enhance existing EPSRC-funded research across the boundaries between Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and BioSciences and, importantly, lead to and support a number of new multidisciplinary research collaborations. The instruments comprise a multi-function scanning probe microscope system, a high-resolution NMR spectrometer and a near-infrared Raman spectrometer. New and emerging research that will be supported includes that on the Engineering/Physics boundary into the fabrication, characterisation and application of nanoscale arrays for data storage, optical and security applications; work at the Chemistry/Biology interface on the development of new treatments for a range of illnesses from cancer to arthritis to Huntingdon's disease, as well as the elucidation of biochemical pathways; research in the Biophysics area into the determination of the structure and physical properties of a number of important biological macromolecules (such as elastin, cartlidge, connective tissue).
