This bid is to provide leading researchers at the University of Newcastle with a carefully-balanced portfolio of state-of-the-art equipment with which to promulgate world class pure and applied research. The seven items to be substantially, but not wholly, funded by EPSRC comprise an advanced test facility for new high performance electric motors, a small versatile SPM for atomic-resolution studies of corrosion, a high performance confocal scanning microscope for quantifying wastewater micro-organisms, a high speed parallel computing facility for mathematics and statistics, a high-resolution NMR for synthetic, solid state and drug chemistry, a high speed particle analyser for monitoring the reaction produces in process-intensified systems and a velocimeter for detailed studies of fluid flow. However, this equipment not only underpins the future development of strong EPSRC-supported research activities at Newcastle (eg electric drives, computing, chemical engineering, and surface chemistry), but will also enable emergent activities in these areas to fully develop (eg to identify the atomic level surface chemistry controlling process intensification) and stimulate synergies between the Biological and Physical Science areas and Engineering (eg particle characterisation of both organic and inorganic impurities and contaminants in water systems, the interaction of tissue with solid surfaces, bio-informatics). These areas have all been chosen by competitive bidding between a number of Faculties and matching these with the Institution's research strengths and strategic research plan ~30% financial leverage is involved (from funds/component migration etc within three Faculties) and the outcome will involve better and new facilities for a wide range of both young and established researchers at Newcastle.
