The research to be supported through this equipment is multidisciplinary, involving Loughborough staff from different department collaborating internally and externally. The research areas are nanotechnology, flow simulation and human thermal behaviour. Characterisation and measurements at the nano-scale occurs in diverse science and engineering disciplines, and in technologies ranging from materials development through component manufacturing to wastewater treatment. The nano-materials we study are polymeric, metallic and ceramic microstructures, macromolecular assemblies and biological materials. Flow visualisation and simulation is a tool with uses; we plan to develop a new 3-dimensional PIV system to study turbulence phenomena in real situations; the developed technique will be tested in various potential applications, including in-cylinder flows in engines, circulations in stirred vessels and spray atomisation systems. It is also often necessary to be able to measure the size and flow of characterisations of droplets and the break-up of jets, and we put forward a number of projects requiring equipment for this purpose. To extend our work on the behaviour of human bodies in relation to thermal comfort, and artificial human body (a thermal manikin) is needed; this will enhance and complement existing work on human physiology.
