The EPSRC equipment initiative provides an opportunity to harness the multidisciplinary expertise within de Montfort University to: 1. Characterise air pollution at both a meso (ie city, county) and micro (ie residential house) scale and explore the links with health, especially the respiratory health in children: and 2. to advance the science and technology for Virtual Product Introduction.1. An electric vehicles will be instrumented to record drive cycles within the city of Leicester. Together with measured traffic volume data and emissions data for different engines an inventory of pollution (CVO, Nox, PM10) can be established. Measurements of the pollutant at different locations will enable air dispersion models to be validated. The traffic pollution levels outside dwellings and the indoor concentration of these, and internally generated pollutants, especially dustmites and fungal spores, will be measured. Questionnaire surveys, monitoring and house surveys will enable the link between pollutant and household characteristics to be investigated. A sample of the homes occupied by children participating in Leicestershire's Department of Child Health 10-year 'cohort study' (of 6000 children) will be monitored. The dispersion models will predict pollution levels at other homes. The suspected link, between childhood respiratory disease and pollutant levels will be studied. The electric vehicle, equipped with pollution monitoring facilities, is at the heart of all these projects and is the focus for this equipment bid.2. The research thrust is directed at effecting a multidisciplinary approach to advance the science and technology for Virtual Product Information.
