A suite will be established using spatially resolved chemical analysis to be performed on a wide variety of samples using infrared microscopy, Raman microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis in conjunction with transmission electronic microscopy. An experienced team will manage and develop this facility, supplying the necessary expertise to support the work of many other researchers. These researchers will compromise two broad categories. The first consists of groups already well supported by EPSRC grants, including the University's interdisciplinary polymer group, its surfaces/catalysis group and those carrying out research in infrared spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The University's total of current EPSRC grants that will be supported by the microspectrometry suite exceeds 1.75m, with an additional 0.3m having been awarded in recent facilities time. The second category of research to be supported by the facility is multidisciplinary work, in which the spectroscopic expertise of the management team will support cross-disciplinary research between specialists in chemistry, physics, geology, the life sciences, archaeology, food science, agriculture, engineering and the built environment. A total of 28 initial projects in these areas have been identified, but it is anticipated that the suite will serve as the core of a microspectrometry facility for a considerable period of time, and that many more projects will eventually be undertaken.
