The research proposal builds on established strengths of research teams with significant portfolios of EPSRC-funded research. The user teams span four disciplines: Chemistry, Physics, Mechanical Engineering and Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and the shared facilities proposed will promote new areas of collaborative research and achieve more efficient use of EPSRC resources in these areas. They will also serve multidisciplinary research involving the Biosciences, Bioengineering, Mathematics and Dentistry, including collaboration with partners at the University of Glasgow, with which Strathclyde has a strategic research alliance.Five distinct equipment developments are proposed: an Electron Probe Mico-analyser, an exceptionally powerful tool for the elemental microanalysis of materials important for science and engineering research, which will complement and significantly extend locally available electron microscopy facilities: a Rapid Separation and Chemical Analysis Facility, which will catalyse interactions between chemistry, biotechnology, materials science and engineering, and will enhance the multi-institution Scottish Polymer Technology Network; an Excimer Laser Micromachining and Material Processing Centre, providing one of the most flexible and cost-effective tools for micro-scale materials processing, micropatterning and micromachining; and improved and extended cross-disciplinary facilities for Dielectric Measurement and for High-Speed Digital Imaging.
