Nottingham will capitalise on this unique and timely initiative, to both stimulate and consolidate inter-and multi-disciplinary activity across and between the traditional boundaries covered by biological, physical, life, bio-medical, and computer sciences, together with materials and electronics engineering. In this context, the University has already recognised the opportunities that will flow from the genomic revolution, from developments and applications of new materials, and from informatics, and has invested substantially in infrastructure, new build and new staff appointments to expand its base in these areas. To establish ourselves at the leading edge of current technology for studying exciting biological and materials-related problems using imaging technologies, we plan to establish three laboratories equipped for Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, Time-Resolved Scanning Confocal Microscopy, and for Scanning Capacitance and Electric Force Microscopy. A new facility for producing novel photonic glass and devices for applications in electronics will also be established, together with provision for studying protein folding and the electronic structures of metalloenzymes using magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. The development and utilisation of innovative methods for data searching and pattern matching for applications in biological and chemical research will be addressed with new computing infrastructure.
