Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary aim of this proposal is to utilise gel permeation / size exclusion chromatography to study the molecular weight characteristics of a range of novel synthetic and naturally occurring macromolecular systems that are currently under investigation by a range of investigators at the University of Reading. The types of materials include liquid crystalline polymers, block copolymers rigid polymers for supercapacitors, dendrimers, polyolefins, carbohydrates and proteins. A major focus of this programme will be to develop methodology for the study of non-linear polymer systems specifically dendrimers, and to investigate the process of network formation in cross-linked polymers (though the analysis of soluble fractions before and after cross-linking). We shall also study block copolymers and though chemical modifications will be able to evaluate structure property relationships. Data from this instrumentation will complement that from the MALDE-TOF system acquired by the Chemistry Department.
