The aim of the research to be undertaken is to provide experimentally validated theoretical models for the simulation of internal combustion engines. Such models are used in the design and development of low-emission and efficient engines. The proposed projects are:* Transient Engine Modelling* Modelling of Turbocharged EnginesThe Transient Engine Modelling project will focus in the development and integration of engine models with dynamic models for drivetrain, wall wetting, sensors, actuators, etc. to allow simulation of transient engine behaviour. The project will include extensive experimental investigation of the dynamic behaviour of the real engine and experimental validation of simulation models.The project to model turbocharged engines will include fundamental studies of the unsteady gas-dynamics thought automotive turbochargers on a custom-build rig and development of an improved turbocharger model. The experimental work will include studies on a direct injection turbocharged automotive diesel engine.In conjunction with one of the sponsors, OPTIMUM, the transient and turbocharger models will be integrated into an engine simulation suite, and validated on dynamometer test beds at QUB. Consequently, both projects are highly dependent on the acquisition of high quality experimental data over a wide range of engine operating conditions.
