Summary on Grant Application Form
The general perception is that the future mobile wireless communications technology will deliver the same quality of service as tethered lines do now. There are, however, a number of obstacles that need to be overcome before this can be achieved. These problems arise principally from the band-limited nature of the wireless circuit, which is also extremely hostile due to multi-path fading. The proposed research into channel equalisations, channel bandwidth utilisation, multiple access schemes and network protocols all require the statistical simulation of real channels and large mobile communications networks. Since bandwidth is expensive voice analysis and synthesis techniques become important, but the high compression rates mean that even single bit errors can distort voice communications for long periods. Transmission of highly compressed video is similarly affected. These vulnerabilities, together with associated protocol and networking issues summarise the focus of the groups efforts.
