Summary on Grant Application Form
The multi-wavelength Raman spectrometer facility will underpin wide areas for multi-disciplinary research in physical inorganic and materials chemistry in (and beyond) the School of Chemistry, including investigations and characterisation of: diamond-like carbon films grown by chemical vapour deposition methods, under a variety of 'exotic' process conditions, and by pulsed UV laser ablation; novel carbon phosphide thin films; boron doped diamond films used as electrodes in electrochemical experiments; the size of semiconductor nanoparticles and the influence of surface chemistry on the energy and density of their surface states; the local compositions and phase identification within native biomaterials and biomimetically-engineered crystals; the synthesis and characterisation of reduced borates, bismuth phosphide and related materials, and wide variety of structured silicas and other oxide materials; the redox and spectroscopic properties of multinuclear transition-metal complexes; and to stimulate new users of last Raman spectroscopy, eg monitoring UV photo-curing of dental composites.
