The present proposal aims to redress the current limitations in the modelling of complex industrial, biomedical and environmental flow processes stemming from the lack of suitable computational facilities. Each flow process has a unique characteristic whose accurate modelling makes the use of a powerful computing facility necessary. More specifically, the requested equipment will enable most extensive Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of turbulent flows in complex engineering processes (encountered mainly in heat exchangers and stirred vessels). LES offer substantial improvement of prediction at the expense of fine grids and hence increased computational time. Biomedical flows, and especially blood flows, involve a moving fluid and a deforming structure and the overall behaviour is strongly influenced by their dynamic, non-linear interaction whose numerical simulation without simplifying approximations is again a time consuming task. Finally, the requested facility will be used for the accurate modelling of environmental flow processes that involve high-resolution spatio-temporal datasets over large areas.
