Summary on Grant Application Form
Systems for broadband radio access within the indoor environment need to be specifically designed to overcome a range of channel impairments. These effects are statistical in nature, but can have a significant effect on both coverage and throughput. Temporal fading, caused primarily by the movement of personnel, can limit system performance and is becoming an important factor in the design of high-bandwidth wireless networks. The broadband channel sounding facility proposed here is aimed at providing accurate measurements for physical layer characterisation. Measurements at frequencies from 5 GHz 5to 60 GHz will be used in two specific research projects: the development of established research in site-specific channel modelling (including the effects of personnel movement) and new research in indoor broadband wireless access. The new research concerns the novel use of a cross-band signalling and control channel for a high-bandwidth network operating at mm-wave frequencies. The signalling channel operates at in a lower band: this maximises data throughput and ensures that the network resources are effectively managed, even when propagation conditions are unavoidably poor.
